Primary Role
This role will oversee SEC reporting and Consolidation team at American Water. Ensures compliance with US GAAP, SEC and FASB rules and regulations in financial reports, company records and material transactions. This position is responsible for reviewing and drafting SEC reports and producing accurate financial statements and disclosures in required SEC periodic filings (i.e. 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K) as well as other external and governmental reports and releases. This position will work closely with the Investor Relations team, SEC Legal team as well as business unit accounting leaders and the finance leaders. Other external filings include Annual Subsidiary Financials and Governmental surveys.
Key Accountabilities

Oversee the preparation and filing of SEC documents, including Form 10-K and Form 10-Q (Including financial statements).

Ensure compliance with GAAP and SEC rules and regulations

Interact with key internal and external SEC stakeholders, including the company's internal Disclosure Committee

Directly leads and owns consolidation of all general ledger source systems (SAP and AX) within Hyperion and review of monthly presentation entries

Responsible for the supervision of staff, could include hiring of the staff, goal/objective setting, performance management and career development planning.

Oversee the preparation & review of all government surveys.

Coordinate with others, including Budgeting & Internal Reporting and Financial Decision and Support Teams to ensure financial reporting compliance with new pronouncements or policies

Coordinate year-end audit and quarterly reviews of financial statements with external auditors

Assist with month end close

Prepare ad hoc projects and prepare responses to various requests for information

Experience/Education

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. MBA in Accounting or Finance preferred

CPA required

At least 8 years of accounting and reporting experience

Background in "Big 4" public accounting preferred

Knowledge and experience with SEC reporting required

Experience in the energy and utility industries preferred

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication, analytical,interpersonal and organizational skills

    • In-depth knowledge of US GAAP and SEC rules and regulations arenecessary.

      • Must demonstrate a high level of integrity
      • Proficient in enterprise information systems. Proficient in MS Officeapplications including Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Word and Outlook.

        Working knowledge of SAP preferred.

        • Team player.
        • Extremely detail and results-oriented.
        • Motivated by challenging, high-energy environment.
        • Strong project management skills to establish and meet deadlines.Work Environment
