Primary Role

Reporting to the Chief Inclusion, Diversity & Equity (ID&E) Officer/Vice President of Talent Acquisition, this role will be responsible for the development and implementation of recruitment strategies that will enable American Water to attract a diverse workforce. The role will proactively source and build American Water's talent pipeline in alignment with the organization's strategic goals.

Key Accountabilities

  • In collaboration with the business and talent acquisition & ID&E team, develop and implement strategic initiatives focused on ID&E
  • Identify and propose initiatives to enhance our current partnerships
  • Effectively identify sourcing techniques, including social media, referrals, networking, and partnerships with community and professional organizations
  • Assist with community engagement responsibilities around deepening current and creating new community partnerships
  • Monitor and report best practices related to recruiting
  • Outline potential pathways and proactively source active and passive talent, with a focus on underrepresented talent, for positions at all levels across American Water's footprint
  • Consult on long-term solutions to data management related to recruitment efforts
  • Perform data analyses using multiple methods to measure progress and ROI of strategies and programs.
  • Consult/coordinate with business partners, TA partners, and hiring managers to understand job specifications, job duties, qualifications, and skills for available positions, and recommend options regarding recruitment strategies
  • Establish and maintain a network of internal and external contacts to help identify and source qualified candidates
  • Represent and/or coordinate attendance for networking events, career fairs, conferences, and leadership events
  • Assist in the development and coordination of a student internship/co-op program across American Water's footprint
  • Serve as an advocate for interns/co-ops
  • Work with ID&E Business Partners to align student opportunities within American Water
  • Successful implementation and management of large-scale projects and programs


    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal (virtual and face to face)
    • Ability to work across teams and work independently with minimal supervision
    • Provide excellent internal customer service
    • Must be able to deliver results
    • Knowledge of key human resources including recruiting, employment law, and basic skills in performance management and employee development.
    • Knowledge of ID&E, employee engagement and culture strategies


      • Minimum 5 years recruiting experience
      • Minimum of 3-5 years of demonstrated partnership building
      • Experience in building and executing programs for internships/coops
      • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required
      • Certifications preferred

        Travel Requirements

        • Ability to travel up to 20 - 30%
