Primary Role

Responsible for the effective operation of the enterprise-wide Compliance and Ethics program (CEP), including ensuring that the enterprise has a program that is based on the Company's values and complies with the United States Sentencing Guidelines (USSG) - -8B2.1. (Effective Compliance and Ethics Program) and industry best practices. The Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) has overarching responsibility to manage the day-to-day operation of the CEP and its strategic planning. Key Accountabilities

  • Lead a team of compliance professionals to effectively and efficiently operate the enterprise Compliance and Ethics program (CEP), based on the standards contained in United States Sentencing Guidelines (USSG) - -8B2.1. (Effective Compliance and Ethics Program) and industry best practice.
  • The CCO ensures the Company complies with applicable laws and regulations.
  • The CCO meets independently with the Chief Executive Officer and Chair of the Audit, Finance and Risk Committee and reports on the status and effectiveness of the CEP.
  • The CCO provides direct advice to the EVP GC, CEO, and the Compliance and Ethics Committee regarding the status and effectiveness of the CEP.
  • The CCO collaborates with the Human Resources team as appropriate on investigations or related matters.
  • The CCO collaborates with Environmental and Safety Operational Compliance.
  • The CCO is responsible for: (i) managing the Company's process to update policies and practices, (ii) effective management of the company's Ethics Helpline, and investigation of the compliance and ethics matters reported through the Helpline and otherwise, and (iii) delivering training on the Company's Code of Ethics and other key ethics-based topics. Key Accountabilities continued
  • Ensure the day-to-day implementation and strategic planning of the components of the CEP, including but not limited to:
  • Communication and Training - develop annual training on the Company's Code of Ethics and other key ethics training.
  • Manage Confidential Reports and Investigations - Oversee the intake of allegations of wrongdoing submitted through the confidential Ethics Helpline or another method and ensure (as appropriate) prompt and thorough investigation of these allegations. Provides reporting of cases to key stakeholders.
  • Auditing and Monitoring - Partner with Internal Audit to audit/monitor other key risk areas.
  • Risk Management - Manage the annual enterprise fraud risk assessment and report results to the Enterprise Risk Management Committee and the Compliance and Ethics Committee. Conduct compliance risk assessment and appropriate response.
  • Ensure appropriate "tone at the top" that fosters a culture of ethics and compliance with law.
  • Partner with management and Human Resources to discuss outcome of investigations.Knowledge/Skills
  • Strong understanding of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines and the components of an effective compliance program.
  • Strong ability to elevate difficult issues promptly and with integrity.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, negotiation, analytical and drafting skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on initiative, knowledge sharing, teambuilding and decision-making.
  • Strong business acumen and leadership skills. Ability to work well on a variety of teams.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to handle sensitive/confidential information in a proper manner.
  • Demonstrate excellent commercial business judgment.
  • Must have the presence and judgment to interact with the Executive Leadership team and the AWK board of directors in a direct and constructive manner.Experience/Education
  • A minimum 10 years of expertise in management or oversight of compliance programs.
  • Certifications & Licenses: Bachelor's degree. Law Degree from accredited law school or Masters in Compliance preferred.Work Environment
