Job Description:

NFI is looking for a Senior Linux Systems Engineer to join the Platform team. This individual will play an active role in the design, architecture, deployment, administration, and maintenance of Systems, Servers, and related equipment for the NFI Organization. Leading contributor individually and as a team member, providing direction and mentoring to others. Work is non-routine and complex, involving the application of advanced technical/business skills in the area of specialization. Extensive experience required in a medium to largely virtualized computing environment. This position reports to the Manager, IT Technology Services.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Primary responsibility for setup, installation, integration, monitoring, documentation, and maintenance of all Linux-based systems in a centralized IT environment
  • Analyzes and evaluates current systems and provides guidance on future technical developments
  • 24x7 environment support including patch/upgrade support
  • Proactive in staying abreast of new technologies and tools
  • Identify opportunities for automation of standard activities
  • Responding to system and/or network faults to ensure internal and external SLAs are met
  • Following escalation procedures to engage key resources to respond to critical events
  • Working with internal stake holders (Dev/Ops, support, sales) and 3rd party vendors to schedule maintenance.
  • Provide escalation-level technical support and system engineering for all Linux-based platforms
  • Work with team members to perform regular system audit and security reviews, including evaluation, implementation, and management of best practices in computer security
  • Create and maintain documentation related to owned services and architecture
  • Assist in the development and implementation of departmental strategies such as standard server builds, virtualization and system consolidation, server lifecycle management, patch management and others as appropriate
  • Take lead in the development and testing of disaster recovery plans
  • Perform ongoing operational activities, problem management, user assistance and training as necessary
  • Provide backup support across other technologies, including UNIX, database, via both formal and on the job training
  • Attend change and release management meetings to ensure communication of approved and planned changes with a view to a strong release to production methodology
  • Support and contribute to open communication flow throughout the organization


    • College Degree - BA / BS preferred
    • Extensive Systems Engineering in an enterprise environment
    • Strong Linux background (RHEL, CentOS, etc.)
    • Proficient / Fluent written and verbal communication in English
    • Strong diagnostic/troubleshooting skill set
    • Ability to assess and prioritize incidents quickly while under pressure
    • Basic understanding of the OSI model and internetworking
    • Bachelor's Degree or working towards a bachelor's degree
    • Capability to multitask in multiple environments
    • Proficient in the installation, configuration and monitoring of enterprise systems including backups, account management, performance management, and capacity planning
    • Proficient with VMWare suite of products
    • Experience with Microsoft tools (AD, WSUS, etc)
    • Experience with Windows Server 2008/2012/2016 as well as Windows Group Policies
    • Proficient with Red Hat Linux - Builds using Kickstart, Configuration, troubleshooting, Docker Containers, Ansible, NFS, SMB, etc.
    • Familiarity with Databases (Oracle, SQL Server) and/or Open source technologies
    • Proficient with Remote User access technologies such as Citrix and VMware Horizon.
    • Experience with AIX 5/6 pseries (lpars)
    • General knowledge of IT security/compliance standards (PCI, PII, etc)
    • Excellent analytic, communication, interpersonal skills, and customer relation skills
    • Red Hat certification a plus (RHCSA)
    • Good coaching skills, Excellent people skills
    • Attention to service excellence and detail
    • Excellent troubleshooting skills
    • Develop and maintain technical and team documentation

    • Preferred:

      • Experience with AWS/Azure-based Cloud Architecture and migration experience
      • Solid understanding of cloud-based hybrid infrastructure (Server, Storage, Network, DB, Apps)
      • Exposure to general DevOps methodologies/technologies (Chef, Puppet, Containerization and Orchestration, Kubernetes, ELK, etc)
